As I sit down to share my journey as a father of a child with additional needs, I’m immediately struck by the depth of emotions that accompany such an experience. My son, a resilient soul who has faced challenges with unwavering strength, was born with Down syndrome, childhood apraxia, and bravely underwent open-heart surgery at six months old, has brought immeasurable joy and lessons into our lives. But alongside that joy, there’s a reality we often hesitate to speak about—the mental health challenges that caregivers like myself face.

May is National Mental Health Month—a timely reminder for us all to confront the mental hurdles we may be facing as caregivers. It’s not just about us; neglecting our mental well-being can have profound effects not only on ourselves but also on the ones we care for.

For many of us, admitting that we’re struggling, mentally feels like a betrayal of our duties as caregivers. We’re conditioned to put our loved ones’ needs before our own, often at the expense of our mental health. But here’s the truth: ignoring our mental needs doesn’t make us stronger caregivers; it makes us vulnerable to burnout, depression, and a host of physical ailments.

The toll of caregiving can be heavy. It’s a constant balancing act—managing appointments, therapies, medications, while also trying to be emotionally present and supportive. It’s easy to lose sight of our own well-being in the midst of it all.

But here’s what I’ve learned: seeking help isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s an act of courage. Whether it’s through therapy, support groups, or respite care, there are resources available to help lighten the load. Organizations like the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), Caregiver Action Network (CAN), and local support groups provide invaluable support and guidance for caregivers navigating the complexities of mental health.

Moreover, acknowledging our struggles doesn’t diminish the love and joy we feel for our children. If anything, it deepens our appreciation for the beauty they bring into our lives. My son has taught me more about resilience, patience, and unconditional love than I ever thought possible. His presence reminds me daily of what truly matters—the joy of family, friendship, and connection.

So, this Mental Health Month, let’s make a commitment—to ourselves and to our loved ones—to prioritize mental well-being. Let’s break the stigma surrounding mental health and create a culture of support and understanding. And let’s remember that in embracing our own vulnerability, we become better caregivers, advocates, and champions for our children.

Dear Friend,

As I sit down to write this letter, I find myself reflecting on the countless times I’ve witnessed individuals, including those who’ve attained remarkable success, continuing to be hard on themselves despite their achievements. It’s a pattern that’s become all too familiar, one that I’ve observed in the pages of books, the frames of documentaries, and even in our own lives. The reason for mentioning that even successful individuals are hard on themselves is to emphasize that it’s not success that will alter your mindset—it’s you who holds the power to change it! In the past, I may have told myself, “Once I’ve achieved my goals, then I’ll adopt a healthier mindset and stop being so hard on myself.” However, I’ve come to realize that this thinking is flawed. I can make that change now, and it will benefit me mentally, emotionally, and physically. And so, I’m compelled to share with you some thoughts on why being hard on oneself is unhealthy, and the transformative power of embracing positivity and self-compassion.

I began this letter with our son in mind, intending to impart valuable insights. However, as I delved deeper into the subject matter, I realized its significance would benefit him even more if shared with you. It’s a message for anyone who is grappling with self-doubt or the burden of self-criticism, in other words being hard on oneself. We’re instilling in our son the importance of sharing information we acquire, and thus, this letter to him has transformed into a letter to you so you can share with your friends, initiating a ripple effect that touches everyone it reaches.

The journey of self-improvement and personal growth is often paved with moments of self-doubt and setbacks. We set high standards for ourselves, striving for perfection in every aspect of our lives. But in doing so, we forget one crucial truth: perfection is an illusion, and our flaws are what make us beautifully human.

When we’re constantly hard on ourselves, it takes a toll on our mental and emotional well-being. We become trapped in a cycle of negativity, constantly berating ourselves for not meeting our own unrealistic expectations. This not only hinders our ability to enjoy life to the fullest but also prevents us from recognizing and celebrating our achievements, no matter how small they may seem.

But here’s the thing: failure is not a sign of weakness; it’s a stepping stone to success. Every setback, every mistake, is an opportunity to learn and grow. Instead of viewing failure as a reflection of our inadequacy, we should see it as a valuable lesson that helps us course-correct and move forward with newfound wisdom and resilience.

It’s essential to acknowledge that we’re not alone in our struggles. So many people wrestle with the same feelings of self-doubt and self-criticism. Yet, there’s strength in vulnerability, in sharing our experiences and supporting one another on this journey toward self-acceptance and self-love.

By shifting our perspective and cultivating a mindset of positivity and self-compassion, we open ourselves up to a world of possibilities. We become more resilient in the face of challenges, more empathetic toward ourselves and others, and more appreciative of the beauty that surrounds us.

By employing individuals with additional needs to research and maintain the website, we provide a platform for them to share their abilities and unique insights and ideas. The website is also a vehicle for educating employers about the benefits of hiring individuals with additional needs.



My wife, Cynthia, and I were blessed with our son, Jack, on May 6, 2010. Jack is with Down syndrome and also had complete AV septal defect which required surgery. During that stressful time I spent many hours on the internet researching Down syndrome and heart defects. I was able to find information about both but information on getting immediate help right here in Naples was not easily available. I spent a lot of valuable time searching.

During these past years, I have amassed a database of resources for parents of a newly diagnosed child with additional needs as well as community resources for adults with additional needs, educators, and the medical industry. Our goal is to have this information easily available to save parents and individuals valuable time when they most require appropriate resources and therapies.

Annual Art Experience for

children & adults with additional needs.

 Celebration of Creation art experience helps bring public awareness to the talents and abilities of those with additional needs. This event is not about “the art” itself, rather, it is about getting people involved! This contest will allow the public to see the talents and abilities that we all have and are capable of. An Art Contest is just a FUN way of doing so.

To help get our artists out into nature, we are basing this years’ art contest on “Nature“. This Nature theme may include art that relates to anything nature related, (animals, landscapes, seascapes, skies, world of flora and fauna, etc). A variety of interpretations of our nature theme may be submitted (representative, abstract, conceptual). The following visual art mediums are acceptable: painting, drawing, fiber art, photography, sculpture or collage.

I read today another school is losing government funding for their special education programs because individuals in power are seeing the now and not the future. So I wanted to share my thoughts with you all on how looking to the future is a win-win for everyone!

Supporting the education of children with additional needs through government funds is crucial for several reasons, and it can lead to long-term cost savings and overall societal benefits.

Here are some key points to consider:
